Jeez. This has been here for several days now and is clearly the most juicy post awaiting a juicy response. I wanted to give someone else a chance, but heck if there are no takers it will just scroll away.
The mentally ill should not be put in jails. And for the record we need to do more for the mentally ill. The problem with the mental illness issue is not just one of money - but of understanding. Many doctors see and diagnose "mild" mental illness as an excuse to start selling pharmaceuticals. Any one of these glorified mind-altering drugs simply disrupts the firing of certain signals in parts of the brain. This isn't a "cure" for mental illness at all. It is merely muted shock therapy and disguised sedation.
I take a somewhat unique (big surprise) view of the mental states of humans and am of the opinion that everyone is mentally ill to some degree or another. Humanity as a whole is generally driven by goals that from a certain perspective - seem entirely insane.
We are born in a body that is designed to die - yet we fear death. Not only do we fear death, but we go out of our way not to talk about it or think to hard about the possibilities of an afterlife. We spend endless human hours designing products to make us appear younger. Yet the young are generally known to be idiots. So we are spending billions of research dollars and hours trying to perfect a method to apppear to be something we're not - a young idiot.
That is insane.
We administer mind-altering drugs to 5 year olds who haven't even had a chance to develop or form yet.
That is insane.
We worship money and people that have money and yet almost all history records the unhappiness of rich people. These rich people spend even more money to try to appear to be young and yet they still can't change the design and they are doubly cursed.
I have great compassion for your mother-in-law and what she and your family has gone through. I can only imagine. And even my imagination can only cover so much.
As for your own personal experience with depression, again I offer my compassion. However compassion is a poor man's substitute for advice or information.
Intelligent and caring folks are often subject to more stress and internal issues than others. Where others could care less about what happens to some folks, these others take and internalize all the stress and consequences of each action and it can lead to a combination of mental paralysis or depression. One of the things they burden falsely under is a sense of responsibility they take the burdens of family members and friends - as their own. They succumb to a false concept - namely that they can somehow control and prevent bad circumstances if only they did more or made the right decisions.
This is erroneous. We cannot save anyone except our selves. We cannot control external events. We can ONLY control our own thinking processes - and even that is a difficult proposition since we are designed to respond to external stimuli.
Naturally, I would feel amiss if I neglected to mention the external influences upon our consciousness and their collective toll and humanity's mental condition. Obsessions and disincarnate entities are taboo as a topic for scientific study. Yet as we start to progress in our understanding of thoughts as wave relationships - we will also realize that each environment, each activity carries its own resident "residue".
Yes a thought is not an intangible thing that evaporates and has no lasting impact. Each thought is real - it is TANGIBLE!
It carves its niche, not only in the person who thinks it - but it resonates in the very environment within which it was conceived. It is very scientific and not mystical or "meta" anything.
Mental institutions therefore are not healthy places to be around. Any place where great violence occurs is also not real healthy. All these thoughts and actions are intertwined with time and space in these locales and these residues can negatively influence and obsess someone who spends any time in these locales.
I've mentioned this a few times before and it is not something folks really think about or can even explain scientifically as I have done. They may merely say some place is "haunted" anbd leave it at that. Technically however - ALL places are haunted. If you could see it as I do - a collective series of regenerating wave forms and cycles - you would see that the good and bad is forever impinged into these structures as a miniscule subharmonic structure. Yet all these miniscule structures have the key to our own human consciousness because they are within a specific frequency and wave length!
You move from house to house - and each house has its own subtle influence on personality and activity. Theoretically a home where great creativity has occurred would be worth substantially more than a home where violence or unhappiness has been in abundance.
These influences can be minimized by an alert consciousness.
Here is another point I have NOT brought up here before:
The conscious mind is not really a "thinking" device. It is more accurately an "attuning" device which focuses thought on specific signals. It attenuates all data that comes at it. It roams freely on remote based upon past recorded data and experience and yet it can also be more actively guided. This is why environment is so important because we use it for our mental cues.
It takes a very stong developed mentality to completely ignore their environment and pursue trains of thought that are not triggered by audible or visual stimuli. It cannot be done completely - for certain external stimuli are necessary to control and be aware of our body, etc. Writer's often get away from it all to spur creativity. This often helps but it is no means mandatory if one learns to block out much of the background noise.
Mental illness is a complex issue - infinitely more complex than the folks we charge with caring for the mentally ill know. In fact, it is a safe bet that many folks who work with these folks are themselves mentally ill to a certain degree. Their environment will wear down their natural defenses and they are more than likely to become "obsessed" to small or large degrees.
If I were to design a formula for successful tratment of the mentally ill it would be to minimize any external influences and keep them in environments that fostered recovery or balance. Drugs are not the answer either. While the most violent of patients are understandably kept sedated - drug usage should be the exception rather than the rule.
Understandably - when the mind is as little understood as it is - recovery rates for mental illness are dismal. Mental illness is only slightly more popular than death as a topic and as such is as equally misunderstood and unable to be dealt with in a positive and constructive manner.
Fear is one of the worst emotions. It is based solely upon ignorance. It accomplishes absolutely nothing. Fearing for our loved ones does them no good whatsoever. Positive action beats self-destructive fear anytime. Feeling sorry for ourselves is equally destructive and doesn't help this attenuating process we call thinking whatsoever.
Mental illness is 100% prevalent in our society. It is only to the varying degrees and perceptions that it is diagnosed or even realized. In a more intelligent world all the present fixations of celebrity, vanity, wealth and power are perceived as clear manifestations of mental illness.
To the person of 2453 visiting our world - the place is presently one big asylum ;-)
Take care MA and always attenuate UP.
