LOL! Hardly! most of the straight-faced entries were universities. The CMU Team spent (estimation:) tens of millions on this. The prize was a formality for most of them- institutional prestige was the primary motivation.

If they said "You win and you get to pay us a million for the privilge", a lot of programs would be lined up still at the starting line, processors and cooling-fans a-revving.
