re: CMU has been working on this technology for 20 years

"As for CMU itself, it is a private university, so in that regard it's closer to private enterprise than to a government operation like a state university. "

Not really, most of the money that comes into our planetary robotics lab is public money, and the so-called 'business model' is no different than a state-funded university like UCSD. That is- you would find the exact same grant-seeking strategy, the exact same managemanr strategy and the exact same organization.

"Follow the links from this site and you can see the extend of their Autonomous Land Vehicle research dating back to 1984. I think DARPA (ARPA) funded at least some of the research through the years."

Hey, I know some of the folks on the Red Team. I wouldn't be surprised if I had taught some of the older students/grad students math-logic classes. The history of the robotics effort at CMU is well known around here- hell, its folklore (and so is 'Red' Whittaker). And DARPA and the penetgon are the BIGGEST funders of this tech. In fact, its all been so speculative until the last year or two that private funding (outside foundations) is damn near unheard of.
