"The reference to large numbers was not about Spaniards protesting the bombings it was about voter turn out.
"A larger than expected 63% of the electorate turned out to vote" "
I would say that the electorate was energized by the terror attack and the marches. The fact that they would go out to vote, would also indicate some defiance (if Raoul you might call it desperation:).
I don't think the results of election can be honesty said to be a caving in to terrorists- I don't anyone could be elected with that mandate.
The conservative might have tried painting the opposition as being weak on terrorism. And liberals would of course be saying they would do things differently.
For instance, here in America, some might suppose that Kerry if elected might pull more US troops out of Iraq. There is no reason to believe Kerry would actually do this, he might even try to put more troops into Iraq by the time Jan 20th 2005 rolls around.
I think the facts on the ground will speak louder, than what some political leaders may have promised. Just because those leaders called for the troops to be removed from Iraq won't neccessarily mean that now they will be removed.
If I had to predict it, I would say Spain is going really going to tighten their security- and you won't hear a peep about from the lefties- and conservative will of course have nothing to complain about.
And since the Left is in power in the UK, I would expect a even closer relationship between UK and Spain.
