It seems to be a sort of 6th grade no-holds-barred mentality. After a while around here, I've come to believe they don't understand the concept of honesty and accountability in discussing issues.
I remember in grade school we'd say anything, do anything to make a point. The issue wasn't being correct, it was to try to make the other guy look dumb. Most of us went through a combination of outgrowing that, and learned what civilized discourse was in school and on jobs.
I don't think they are bad people, probably good neighbors. I wouldn't want to do business with them, but that's just me. I think it's possible they're the types who would wreck something and try to take it back to the store. And believe they were correct, because after all, the store makes a lot of money.
I really, truly believe Tom is puzzled, thinks mis-quoting is OK, and slinging the term "liar" around is normal conversation.
Anyway, that's my "read". You made a good run at it, as did I. As far as I'm concerned the matter is closed.
Pa Bowser once told me that if I were ever dumb enough to corner a coward, they'd piss on me and then shit themselves. And that was the best that could happen.
Smart man. Don't know how he ever married Ma.
