re: Universal . . . ?

The only "universal" reference points are life and death -- so far.

It is possible that we may come across a species that has utterly no fear of death, simply because it doesn't happen -- for them.

It is also possible we may one day find a species that is so old it has no concept of its start, and so life is merely that which happens to go on (the deathless thing again, but I think moreso).

Robert's reference to "Starship Troopers" and the mindset of 'bug killing' is an excellent one. The higher species of the bugs understood death and feared its approach. Their species was to conquer the Universe. Anything less was death. As such, any other life form was to be considered a deadly enemy. Humanity falls into this catagory as well, but in a far more tollerant manner. We don't have to conquer all, but we do still have to survive.
