If we had some ethical common ground with an alien race, they'd be very much like us. A little too much to actually be "alien".
It's like the exoplanet hunt: we find the most massive ones and the nearest ones to their star first, but they are not like Earth at all.
Aliens we'll first encounter (if ever) will be so different from us, ethics won't really apply. The thing is: they would have to be recognizable as an alien species but they'll be extremely different. Once their discovery established, lots of rules and understandings will have to be crreated to deal with them and especially if they have some similarities with us.
The Silver Rule would be easier to apply;don't be provocative, don't give an impression of being too hasty. First visual contact, then approaching and eventually emitting sounds, but don't try to touch them before you're sure you understand each other.
