The Middle East is sociologically where we were about 400 years ago, except we had muskets and they have Uzis. (yipes!)
They have a hell of a lot more than Uzis. Nineteen people with boxcutters killed almost 3,000 people and flattened a major part of Manhattan. Radical Muslims already have access to some forms of WMD, and are trying their damnedest to get at the rest. Iran is trying to build an atomic bomb under the U.N.'s nose, and getting away with it. At least one of their mullahs is on record as claiming that weathering an atomic attack from Israel would be worth it if Israel perishes. Pakistan, already armed with nukes, is one change of leadership away from being a real problem.
Which is exactly why we're in the situations we are in right now, and not just calmly reading about the horrors overseas over morning coffee, safe behind our oceans.
A lot of people are talking about how we're "forcing" freedom on people. Was this what happened with Germany and Japan after WWII? The latter, in particular, didn't exactly have a long tradition of freedom either.
