Britain preferred to give up gracefully rather than to have her colonies rip themselves away from her in bloody rebellion. She had already experienced that.

Canada. The Queen is still the "sovereign", but that's not worth much.

Australia.

New Zealand.

Even the India/Pakistan mess was not as bad as it could have been had Britain not recognized the inevitable and worked toward a peaceful separation.
