The heroes who died bringing down another potential airliner/missile knew what was going on elsewhere, because they were alerted by their relatives on the ground, using their cell phones.
The past policy of airlines was to go along with hijackers rather than to endanger the lives of the passengers, because all past hijackings had used the passengers as hostages. There was high probability of recovering all the hostages alive.
The 911 hijackings had no such intent. The passengers were "bonus victims" in the attacks on the objectives. That much was plain to the passengers and crew of Flight 93. The new knowledge learned via cell phone changed the ground rules for resisting hijackers in those few minutes. I also suspect that they had some hope of salvaging the situation and somehow saving the airplane. A suicide attack to counter a suicide attack doesn't strike me as a Jersey thing to do either.
New knowledge must be used carefully to illuminate the areas in which it is specifically useful, not as a match struck to see inside of a gasoline tank.
Fight for our lives? Absolutely!
Make an "example" of a holy place? Sure, we can be like the hijackers. We can target symbolic places and kill innocent people using it for its intended function. NOT.
Call it an "accident"? And who then will believe the real accidents are accidents?
If anything, the current Israeli strategy of taking out known leaders with great specificity rather than randomly terrorizing the population is a better choice, but only if terror is not one's objective.
