The concept of wealth redistribution by force, of centralized control of the means of production and the productive individual, "From each according to his abilities," and all the rest are rooted in a poisonous philosophical principle of collectivism that has been responsible for more blood, misery, poverty and death this century than almost all the rest of history combined, and that the moderate liberal would rather have his fingernails ripped out by pliers than face this unpleasant fact straight on.
