I see a number of the others at least once a year: when they have to make a list of books to use in their upcoming year to satisfy the state that they're doing something besides having the kid do odd jobs around the house.
One year, I was the de facto home school teacher for a young man whose mother decided he would "volunteer" for the library in order to make sure that he had adult supervision at least one day a week. She worked full-time, so he was supposed to follow a curriculum she had purchased all by himself. He was in the sixth grade. I understand he didn't pass his grade-level assessment that year, and was sent to public school the following year to repeat the sixth grade. He probably didn't consider himself lucky, but I did.
