Tom, you are partly correct- parental involvement is important no matter how you are educated. Self motivation is also essential.
But ask your self this: How long would it take you to read and digest a social studies text book? maybe 2 days? Now look at how many weeks are spent doing the same in public school.... it is a waste of time for anyone with a brain. In a 5th or 6th grade science class I had to make a model of the solar system that was the size of a shoebox... I got references and gave the vital statistics of each planet ( number of moons, mass, distance from the sun, etc) I got a B- because it 'wasnt pretty'. Kids that couldnt even get the order of the planets right got A's...
In Jr high I had a cool science teacher that would give silly essay assignments like "write about the importance of the moon", she let me write about neutron stars and black holes instead... I could choose my topic... She was fired quickly because she said that evolution was supported by the facts.
Public school is a joke... A high school educatin qualifies you to operate a cash register, nothing more.
