Frank, I went through an awful lot of life just letting things like that bounce off of me but what's changed is our political and societal climate. I'm starting to see, day by day, a slow infusion in this country of militant Christians, the types that aren't just happy with their own beliefs, but increasingly seem to want to force them upon others around them. The new push for government to fund faith-based charities, the legislation to give vouchers for schools (without restrictions to their religious content), the fight against stem-cell research, the moves by school boards to put creationism into their curriculum; these are all modern phenomena that seem to me to be expanding rapidly.
9/11 is being used as a rallying point by the fundamentalists of this country to divide us into these camps. We're bitterly divided over a guy like George Bush who absolutely wears his faith on his sleeve. His father made numerous pronouncements while in office about how atheists shouldn't have a political voice.
I'll add onto this later. Need to help the wife with dinner.
