Certainly Frank, the feeling of threat I'm talking about isn't from the average Joe on the street. I'm very secure about the fact that I'm in a minority when it comes to my own feelings.
History has shown though that that same Joe citizen can get boxed into corner though when one ideaology becomes prevalent in a nation. Certainly the citizens of Germany, prior to Hitler's rise to power, were not substantially different humans than American citizens. I like to think that were I there at the time people went into survival mode and went along with the Nazis, that I would've been uncomfortable enough to have fought against it. It is likely I would've died for that resistance. Obviously, our country isn't close to that extreme but my thought is that we always have to be vigilant to keep us far from that point where the extremists get enough critical momentum to blow away the few voices of reason.
Why is it we can't be satisfied with our political ideaology simply having a seat at the table instead of needing them to completely overwhelm the other side? I would be happy to welcome the radical religious right's input on issues as long as they didn't require their ideals to have to win completely to keep them satisfied. I feel the same about the ideals from the radical leftists. A complete welfare state is a horrendous outcome for any country. It removes all ambition.
