All votes do count today, and if you are a democrat, they often count twice.

The democrats are so good at voter registration they even get dead people to vote straight ticket absentee ballots.
I think we will be sticking with our federal system precisely because not many states will see the doubtful wisdom of giong to straight national popular vote.
If we were to reorganize into a Parliamentary system, where the party in charge is actually able to execute its platform, there may be some merit.
But as long as we have a federated, checks and balances system, we should have the EC.
