I thought Bush could have done better but I was never that impressed with him in any of the debates with Gore. As I recall, Gore was generally thought to have gotten the better of it in the first debate, yet Bush is now credited with winning all of them handily.
I am a terrible judge of what plays well with the public.
Kerry seems to be the better performer and Bush did look annoyed and a bit tired at times. I thought Bush's best moment was when Kerry said he would favor pre-emptive intervention based on global accord (or however he stated it) and Bush responded to the effect that the defense of this country is not a global affair. Overall Bush had several good moments and some bad visuals while Kerry had a steady but unspectacular showing. If the Bush campaign follows up, they can make some hay out of Kerry's support of bi-lateral talks with NK.
I believe the thing was probably a draw, with Kerry getting points on style and Bush on substance. Kerry did nothing to shake the flip, flop image imo.
I heard some pundits before and after say that Bush was in a position to put Kerry away tonight with a strong performance. He fell short of that and he has left Kerry the possibility of building on tonight with strong showings in the next two outings.
