Now that every other line of thinking has been dismissed, we're left with outlawing the guns. Which is the only solution "progressives" have ever had for this issue, and the one everyone's been dancing around and pretending isn't there.
I get lectured for pointing out insurmountable difficuties in this situation, something many people have noticed, and the discussion becomes focused on that attitude, not on the difficulties themselves. This is not productive.
Go ahead, national leaders. Form Committees. Have Discussions and Conversations in High Places. Make Concerned Speeches. Shed a manly tear or two. Get Joe Biden to run a Task Force. Spend money on studies. Propose dozens of pieces of legislation outlawing Scary-Looking Guns that will affect four percent of guns used in homicides, and will probably end up being voted down by as many Democrats as Republicans.
Dazzle the uninformed voters with your virtue, your caring, and your fervent desire to Do Something. They won't notice that nothing will really be done, or change. Not noticing things is their wheelhouse.
The important think is the aura of virtue and compassion that the anti-gun politicians will walk away with. And that's what wins elections.
