Grant-funded projects make up a lot of research funding.
Whole positions are based on the ability to write and obtain grants. Some Federal, some state. The state ones are drying up because of the lousy economy.
Of course, there are major non-profits and corporations that fund grants, too.
Where funding for research really doesn't come from: tuition.
