The subject was whether or not something gets funded in the first place, not what the results end up being.
You can control scientific research to some extent by shifting research money to subjects you want researched. Honest results don't make much difference in that picture. A lot of people here are highly sensitized to the private sector doing this, but policitians do it too, and not just one party.
Government agencies have more resources than almost anyone except major private universities, who get quite a bit of their money from …drumroll, please… the government!
