Do talk to that taxi driver.

Find out how long he's been at it, and how long he expects to stay there.

Of course, you simply constructed this anecdotal person out of thin air, otherwise uncomfortable questions start to come up:

Why is there only one job in existence that he can hold down in a big city? One assumes that you wouldn't be a taxi driver in a farm town. Why is that job a long car ride away? Doesn't that job pay him enough money for gas? Are there buses? Trains?

How about we throw in that his house burned down, and he had no insurance? Or God came down and inflicted him with boils?

You can create an imaginary circumstance to meet any point I have. But look at the real world.

In the real world, a lot of people in lower income levels change their circumstances, as soon as they can, and deal with things. Initiative doesn't cost anything. These people don't stay poor very long.

There is nothing that makes steam come out a liberal's ears more than the idea that someone's circumstances just might be their own damn fault. The entire culture of the Left is based on people being helpless victims. Power is gained by promising to give these victims what they want. Nobody wants to hear about bootstraps.
