Sure, there are people whose circumstances are their own damn fault.

These are the linear cause-and-effect people that conservatives love so much.

They include:

People who are illiterate. Why don't they learn how to read?

People who are mentally ill. Why don't they stay on their medication? (That's a whole book right there...)

People who have grown up in an atmosphere of fear and violence. Why don't they just get over it, or join the Marines? (The Marines might not take them.)

People who are drug addicts, except for cigarette smokers. Why don't they just kick the habit? And for smokers, why don't those liberals leave them alone?

You asked if there were no buses or trains for Daniel's taxi driver to take. What: public transportation? Like, the kind paid for by government?? With [ptui!] taxes??? Let me take your temperature!

We all make lots of choices. Sometimes one bad one can screw up a life for a very long time. Sometimes the one who makes the choice is the one who gets screwed up, but sometimes not. In a world where we don't give a rip about each other, it only matters whether I and mine are doing all right.
