the only General Relativity expert in the Mathematics School at the major University here
I'm being vague out of a clumsy effort to protect the guy's identity, although I imagine he must have told the Department of his plans by now .. I'm assuming the conversation was in confidence, even though he was quite chatty and I was just the shit-kicker Masters graduate who telephoned him to ask about potential PhD projects ..
Actually, there are 2 major universities in Sydney .. and at the most, I'm pretty sure only 2 researchers in Mathematical General Rel. I did speak to the other guy - at the other uni - but he pretty quickly got rid of me (me not being a Maths honours graduate - maybe he was right)
Physics departments are another story, they don't do much GR here, for instance at Sydney Uni Physics there is just one guy doing gravitational microlensing, and that's the closest that department gets to anything to do with GR. I don't know what the other Uni's Physics dept does although I think they have a cosmologist, who works from statistical observations. Again, that's a far cry from real GR.
Anyway - just being more precise in the interests of accuracy in my posts
