The problem with not paying any attention to Moon bats is that some think they have a direct line to the Whitehouse and want to remove Mars from the new program.

Note the new acronym for the Moon, Mars and beyond is VSE not MMB or SEI. I can see not wanting to use the failed Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) as acronym but MMB is okay and not used because they didn't want a constant reminder of the second M being Mars.

Vision for Space Exploration sounds like there is some eye problem at NASA.

The only point to converting the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) to a Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) would be to screw the Mars Program. Tom Matula has an agenda to stop Mars Exploration. I don't think he can, but it is advisable to pay some attention to nuisances. He thinks there is a Mars Mafia which has only two members Dan Goldin and Robert Zubrin. They have somehow stopped Moon exploration/exploitation for more than 35 years and instead have promoted Mars exploration exclusively. It doesn't matter than Zubrin doesn't work at NASA or Goldin was influenced by the policies and politics of presidents he worked for.
