I doesn't show that you read Goldsmith's book. I believe I have a copy and have read it.
It not paranoia. The current plan calls for increase of NASA budget just when the current administration believe the economy tanks out at 1% growth. It also calls for a continued support of congresses and presidents not yet chosen. We need to join together now or lose the game.
I believe robotic mission to Mars are important for many reasons few of which are economical. I also believe the Moon miners can find support outside of the government to explore and exploit the Moon. They want to take the path of least resistance and exclude other mission more worthy of NASA current expertise.
