The Non Governemental Organizations such as Medecins sans frontieres or especially UNICEF have a worldwide network of people who know each other, contact each other for the best way to get relief efforts to a place with what kind of materiel, what kind of food, etc...Plus they have the experience of previous disasters and know what to do and what NOT to do.
For instance, a few months ago I got a phone call from Unicef thanking me for money sent for a previous disaster and asking if I couldn't instead send a little every month (through bank domiciliation) rather than a large sum only once, which isn't a healthy way for them to work with and it was accepted.
The NGOs have doctors in their ranks, people who know the areas, the risk of deseases; the way to handle specific injuries, the way to get the food where it's needed.
Give the NGOs and UNICEF more credit for god's sake.

- And how long does this gloat of yours last?
- It depends...
- Bush waits 3 days before giving Asia tsunami survivors 15 million dollars.....
- sorta like high stakes poker--Bush raised pot from $ 15 mil to $ 35 mil and now to $350 million.....
- Kofi Anan waited 4 days...
- Maybe Kofi Annan can give some of his oil for food kickbacks to help. (n/t)
- What the hell is wrong with you?
- Don't worry Lindy, preznit is sending brother Jeb............
- The fact that you think I'm gloating only further demonstrates what the problems are.
