This, of course, is one of the reasons going to war in Iraq was such poor foreign policy. It has become a convenient little engine to stimulate anti-American enmity throughout the Muslem world. And Mr. Bin Laden can conveniently speak to our unwelcome presence in Iraq at the acquiescence of the Saudi government, which may very well destabilize the political situation there. Its a great little propaganda tool Mr. Bin Laden has been able to exploit to broaden his political base. Lets hope it doesn't take root.
We would have been better off sticking to Afghanistan and continuing to rely upon the success of sanctions in Iraq. Keep in mind that Iraq had a secular tradition that is not likely to remain as the Shia majority takes the political reigns of the country. And most Muslem nations that were perfectly happy to see the Taliban trounced and less enthused about the regional instability we created by invading Iraq.
When we took Saddam from power, we opened a window for Islamic fundamentalists to assert themselves in the guise of democracy. I have no doubt that upon our inevitable departure from Iraq, it will become an Islamic theocracy like Iran. It will be the perfect place from which to foment revolution in Saudi Arabia.
Lucky us.
