During the liberation of Kuwait from Saddam, one of the big gripes that Islamic Fascists like bin Laden had with us was our polluting the sacred soil of Saudi Arabia with the boots of our soldiers. Keeping a large force of American soldiers in the Persian Gulf goes a long way towards maintaining our interests there. Of course we have a presence in Qatar and Kuwait but that is at the pleasure of the local ruling prince. Eventually we'll be able to claim some old Iraqi airfield as our own and convert it into a large American outpost along the lines of Diego Garcia. Our claim to that airfield will be through right-of-conquest rather than trhough the pleasure of a local prince. When the poop hits the fan in Saudi Arabia, we can use that military outpost as our staging area for any military response that might be required.
