Without the US the thugs would take back over. Most Iraqi's have brains enough to get that even if most Europeans don't. More Iraqi's are being recruited to fight the terrorists than are being recruited to fight with them because it's their tactics that are irritating most Iraqi's.
It's pretty moronic to think that terrorists would prefer someone who will continue to fight them to one likely to cave to them despite any supposed gain in recruitment. Their primary goal is to expel Americans and regain control of Iraq not gain recruits. Gaining recruits is only a secondary goal to attain the first. In addition, it doesn't help them to gain recruits when the opposition is gaining more. Of course one would expect the French not to understand strategies that could lead to victory.
