"And your solution was? "
Get China involved.
It's not in Chinese national interest for N korea to have nuclear weapons [if it was in Chinese interest, they could simply sell or provide N korea with Nuclear weapons- though it's very probable that at some level and some degree the Chinese have assisted N korea achieve their nuclear weapon ambition. By having the Chinese involved, it has the secondary benefit of establishing the country's policy in regards to N Korea]. Additionally and far more important by having all countries in region involved it changes the political dynamic from N Korea vs the evil capitalistic America [confrontation and warlike position in regards to the US is a MAJOR part of the propaganda they *beat* into their citizens] to N Korea involved in a international agreement.
Another aspect is face. Why would China not be involved? They are a world power and N Korea is on their border and N Korea is/was their client state. In the Chinese worldview they a growing superpower that will one day overtake the US as the biggest superpower.
And there are other reasons besides the ones mention above- basically it's just a realistic approach, whereas the previous approach was mostly a fantasy.
