Current Events » in reply to Don't recall any teachers "making me excited"...

When I was a kid, it would have been unthinkable to tell off a teacher.

Sure, some of them were assholes, but it was not our place to set them straight. Our parents would have reamed us out a new one. They would not have cared if we were right or not. "My teacher and I don't get along" or "My teacher has it in for me" were simply not allowable excuses. We were expected to get with the program, the school system had no obligation to adapt to us.

This is probably the one area where I am in complete agreement with conservatives. The loss of the right to use corporal punishment by teachers marked the beginning of the decline of order and discipline in the schools. Kids learn behavior by operant conditioning, not through logic or reason. I'm not blaming kids, it is perfectly natural that they are programmed by nature to follow their peer group, not an arbitrary adult authority figure. The moment they realize "this old fart cannot touch me, they cannot force me to do anything" you have lost control of them.

In spite of my ancient school days, I never once recall a teacher abusing their power and treating a student unfairly. if there were bullies I didn't see any. Some of them were indeed assholes, but I really felt they cared about us,
