one point...

Hi Guys

Nathan, you stated the other dimensions of String Theory seemed so arbitary, but surely after reading Greene you know that those dimensions are constrained to be a Calabi-Yau manifold and ONLY such a topology duplicates the particle physics of our Universe. Surely that's a big constraint already. That there might be 10^500 possible vacua could be String Theory's strongest point, as pointed out by Susskind, because it allows for all the possible universes to spring forth at the Big Bang (or in Superspace) and to "explore" all possible worlds including bio-friendly ones. Such a plenitude of possibilities avoids hairy conundrums like how our Universe is plucked so precisely from so many possible physics, most of which are empty of life and observers.

Of course explaining why such a richness exists in the first place is more properly metaphysics and the realm of philosophers and theologians. To then argue that the Multiverse of String Physics means there is no need for a Divine Selector is just daft - it replaces one "infinite" complexity [aka God] for another [the Multiverse.] So it's a meaty enough view to allow atheists and theists to argue endlessly wth no hope of easy resolution - which us agnostics have been saying for years.
