I called in when Kaku was on a local talk show about Cassini, and got him to admit that yes, there are many classes of missions that could not be done with solar power, and no, he could not imagine any nuclear system he'd ever be comfortable about, and therefore, he believed that anything about the solar system that could not be learned with solar powered missions alone was not worth knowing -- better to stay home and leave the maps blank than to go with anything radioactive.
I'd give Kaku some moral credit at least, if he weren't working in any area of physics that itself wouldn't even exist without a huge amount of nuclear-related research being done. His string theories wouldn't have any data to try to explain without a huge set of knoweldge gathered by the high-energy physicsts over the years.
