My first glimpse of "2001" was in a Popular Science (or was it Popular Mechanics?) article before the movie came out. The spaceships and interiors, for someone raised on Irwin Allen's cheesy blinky-light consoles and fiberglas models on TV, completely blew my mind. It was love at first sight. In the movie, I devoured every set and model, pretty much losing interest when the psychedelics started.
Since that film, almost every movie spaceship has been a flat gray, with model parts "kit-bashed" all over it.
A book, "The Making of 2001" (shown on your photo) told me that the filming techniques were surprisingly simple, making use of a remarkable front-projection technique for many scenes.
