We humans haven't explored nearly enough yet for the definitive answer to alien life

And to semi-quote from a 1959 Pogo comic strip (for you young ones, Pogo was the Doonsebury/Boondocks of its day, for lack of a better comparison), two of the characters are sitting by a pond. One of them says how scientists think there may be "ad-vanced" brains elsewhere in the Universe. On the other hand, we humans might be the most "ad-vanced" beings in existence. There is a brief pause, and the same character responds to his own comment:

"Either way, it's a mighty soberin' thought."

You can find the actual strip towards the front of the classic work on alien life, Intelligent Life in the Universe, by Carl Sagan and I. Shklovski, first published in 1966. Some sobering reading there as well, even almost 40 years later.
