Hi All
Gary, I know you think the collision problem is insuperable above ~ 0.01c, but what does that do for interstellar prospects if that's the limit and yet the average distance between suitable planets is ~ 30 ly or more?
Personally I think that a WorldShip would struggle to bridge a 3000 year journey and yet remain dynamic enough to colonise a system at the other end. 3000 years of quasi-static civilisation would imply an incredible social rigidity.
OTOH if the colonists were uploads held in stasis with the journey looked after by non-sentient "nannybots" then big trips should be feasible. If we can ever get tissue-printing to the point of body duplication then even flesher colonists could be "reformed" at journey's end. Of course subsequent visitors can arrive as uploads wafted to the stars on EM-signals, so the "Empire" can be linked at the speed of light.
Just an idea.
