You don't have to read a book to burn it.

Or deface it with markers, "commentary", and white-out. (At least the people who deface books with commentary -- and I don't consider it defacement if they do it to a copy that they themselves own -- must have taken the time to open the book and read part of it.) Or steal it from stores and libraries to throw it in the garbage. Or reshelving creatively, both in commercial establishments and scholarly ones. Or threaten bookstores, publishers, and libraries with legal action or commercial boycott. Or, famously in the case of Salman Rushdie, threaten the author, publishers and vendors with death.

I'm happy when someone publishes a list, because it gives me something to look for. But I am far from pleased that the lists themselves exist. If one wishes to fight an idea, one must do so by confronting it, not destroying access to it. Extermination by destruction doesn't work. Many a Catholic school student considered the Church's "Condemned" list to be required reading. Emile Zola was on that list for many years...
