If you counted the killings in the name of religion over history, the toll would be in the millions. How many millions, I couldn't begin to guess, so comparisons to "death by government" are difficult if not impossible.
At the same time, a lot of good has also been accomplished in the name of religion. That doesn't whitewash the killings, but I can't think of much good that came from Fascism or communism.
