What is being tried by the media and Bush's opposition is the careful merging of Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and various facilities in Afganistan and elsewhere.
Also being combined into one large mass of information are the prison situations from the war in Afghanistan, which most here consider legitimate, with the war in Iraq, which many do not.
I would bet money that if you took a survey of citizens on the street, and asked them about all those prisoner photos taken in Guantanamo, a majority wouldn't catch it.
The fact is that Guantanamo has had no deaths, is associated with a legitimate military action and the actual war on al Qaeda, and the interrogation procedures and treatment of prisoners could be considered torture only by the most ludicrously broad definitions.
As with most other issues of this type, this is much more about handing a defeat to the current administration than any real concern for the prisoners down there, or any actual analysis of how these things should be done.
It doesn't take a lot of cruising around the liberal and leftist boards on the net to see that the real goal is a replay of the 1970s: our military fleeing in disgrace, and a president forced to resign.
