He didn't have to resign at all. He could have waited to be impeached.

Richard Nixon resigned rather than be impeached for tampering with investigations into a burglary and other criminal activities conducted by his re-election committee. He was never tried for any of this in a criminal court because he was pardoned for "everything" by his successor, Gerald Ford.

Tampering with a criminal investigation is itself a crime, and unacceptable in the official charged with execution of the law.

If George W. Bush tampers with a criminal investigation, I would be very happy to see him impeached. And convicted in criminal court. But unless someone discovers evidence that he has done such a thing, we will have to do what we can politically to make sure our voices are heard.

Please try to keep straight what the historical record actually is when you attempt to intuit what liberals want.
