Just throwing this out here -
IMO, the attempt to add "realism" to Star trek by featuring dark, cramped interior shots probably did a lot to end it.
Star Wars is now over as well.
What will the next generation of science fition movie look like?
Better yet, will there even be another generation of science ficion movies, or was demand for these products a result of the societies of the 20th century? At first 20th century science fiction was set in our solar system, but as we learned about the planets it was moved to galaxies far far away where no man had ever gone before. I think that "Deep Impact", "Armageddon" and "Outland" were significant exceptions here.
Other sf focused on man-computer-robot interaction, notably the pessimistic cyber-punk of Gibson and others and the "Terminator" series. A pretty grim future was foreseen: there is fear.
Also worthy of mention are overpopulation, "Soylent Green" and global warming, "The Day after tomorrow" - also pretty grim.
I have two treatments which are very different "hard" sf - maybe someday I'll have time again to try to sell them.
Or maybe the market has simply ended. Take a look at "darkhorizons.com" for currnent projects - there are none.
