The movie was loaded with symbolism. Mostly centered around animals which contrasts (In my opinion) with the veiwers sense of what is it that makes one "human".
Of course opinions differ but I believe the dove symbolized a "religous epiphany" of sorts...Like the holy spirit or some similar religious force grabed a hold of him and awakened in him the human trait of forgiveness, passion, and a love of life in not just himself, but others as well.
The nail in the hand could very well have had something to do with religion as well...As he died, he accepted death in a way that allowed others to live...A definite religious theme.
With that said, most of the imagery didn't really have anything to do with religion though...Again, I think it was used to question what is it to be human?
I believe that Blade Runner was the greatest Sci Fi movie ever. ET & Star Wars don't hold a candle to it. (Although they were very good movies on their own...
Remaking Blade Runner would be like re-making Citizen Kane.
