Ya know, I did kinda like ID4 (My God, has it already been out for 9 years now?!). The aliens were not implausible either biologically or their motives. Sadly I could imagine a colony of such beings roaming the galaxy in search of resources to exploit, with little concern for anyone who might happen to already be there.
Of course if water and rocks are all they wanted, surely a comet/planetoid belt would do without all the extra work of removing any inhabitants, but then it wouldn't be much of a film - to the majority of filmgoers, anyway.
I know it has been mentioned before, but one of my favorite SF films that tried awful darn hard to be scientifically accurate and have scientists who looked and behaved like real scientists - Andromeda Strain (1971). And I have heard nasty rumors that they want to remake THAT one too!
Hollywood, leave our few good SF films alone!
