Of course in a parallel universe, your near-duplicate is just thrilled with parallel universes. :^)
Contact the film was not boring, but I prefered the 1985 novel in numerous respects (It should have and could have been made into a miniseries). And it was one of the few good and hard SF films of the last few decades.
And Contact did give the public not only a chance to see some real idea of what searching for aliens is like (it had the misfortune of coming out right after Men in Black - I liked MiB as entertainment, but as science?) but it also had an intelligent and strong (for the most part) female lead who was also - GASP - not a "believer"! But I could not stand the Palmer Joss part as portrayed by smarmy cruiser Mathew McConney (no, I don't care if I misspelled his name). The Palmer Joss of the novel was a much more intriguing and truly spiritual character.
