I've always hoped for private sector Mar rovers.

sf was based on tehnological optism, though it would often focus on how that optism was misplaced and technology went awry. Today there just seems to be so much pessimism. In Star Wars for example, the optimism is provided by a type of religious science which the Jedi develop.
