Star Trek has always tried to be at least somewhat scientific, even (or perhaps especially) in the early days. And up until Enterprise, the series had kept my interest (yes, even DS 9, though they had gotten so far away from the theme of exploration with that one).
They knew what a galaxy is - ten points right there. And if get past the dylithium crystals, the principles for the Enterprise drive is based on the Bussard ramjet.
And at one time real, actual, diplomaed medical doctors who performed medicine were genuinely interested in McCoy's diagnostic beds and hand-held medical scanners (yes, I know they were salt-shakers in real life, but shhhh). And need I say more about their communicators? And did you know that the development of computer floppy disks were partially inspired by the disks Spock used to feed into his science station computer? And did any ships in Star Wars get their names put on a real Space Shuttle? NOOOOOO!
Star Wars is nearly pure fantasy with some starships thrown in. Exploring the galaxy and encoutering new alien life - what's that got to do with anything? Let's have more light saber duels and mystic mumbo-jumbo to seem deep to the over-pampered kids and adults who got to wait in line outside of theaters for 2 months.
SW totally derailed what 2001: A Space Odyssey had started as part of the film revolution of the 1960s and early 1970s.
