Mars Meteorite ALH 84001 – An Illustrated History

Bacteria have survived frozen for 255 milion years Joe. ALH84001 took about 16 million years to reach Earth and tests show bacteria could have survived a trip inside it. While he risk is relatively low due to the multiple low probability events required for a viable transfer beyond hazardous life actually existing on Mars, the risk would also be low with well designed containment equipment and procedures roughly balancing the risk of being passive or being active. Only by actively recovering samples from Mars are we likely to gain benefits.
