..the US violated any pretense of neutrality when it assisted England and provided resources and ships. The Lend-Lease Act (March 1941)was a thinly disguised act of war. 31 billion dollars (1941 dollars!) to Britain! FDR knew exactly what he was doing. Hitler was practically forced to declare war on the US - a nation which, I can assure you, he had no desire to wage war with in 1941.
FDR was 1940's version of Kaiser Wilhelm...a man planning and intent upon going to war and triggering declarations of war and inviting hostilities against the US. An action sure to consolidate and perpetuate political power for a party that was, in 1939, quite unpopular and in a downturn. We all know we don't change horses in mid-stream when under fire.
"Cynical" most would say. But, sadly, "quite true" is more apt.
As a liberal might say, he was "namecalling" while "wrapping himself in the flag" and "creating an unnecessary conflict that America had no stake in" all while "fear mongering" and using "patriotism as a club".
Anyone who's seen the hate-filled, racial stereotyped propaganda pieces that came out after December 7, knows exactly what type of adminstration we had in office. FDR - the only American president to put Americans in internment camps. And for no reason other than the color of their skin and the slant of their eyes.
HATE Mary Anne....HATE keeps folks in power. Sure Hitler used HATE like a badge of honor...but any honest historian can't escape the fact that FDR used it just the same as a convenient tool to consolidate his, and his parties, own diminishing power.
When it's your party using hate its ok, but when the other party does it it is an abomination.
;-)
PS
Lest anyone doubt my patriotism in pointing out such...I lost relatives on both sides of the fight, making me the closest thing to an objective observer.
