In 1943, Hitler was invading every country in Europe. At the time, he commanded the strongest military force in history. Germany was very much a serious threat to American interests and freedom in Europe.
Contrast that to Saddam Hussein. In 2003, he was pathetic little despot with no air force, no tanks, no organized army and a handful of small missles with a range no better than about 50 miles. He was no threat whatsoever to us, or his neighbors. Two-thirds of Iraq was a no-fly zone where American and British aircraft flew with impunity. And for ten years, his military had been allowed to atrophy into essential non-existence. He put all his discretionary cash into building palaces, digging hideouts and erecting statues.
We have every business in the world entering World War II against Germany and Japan. Likewise we had every justification to invade Afghanistan and topple the regime there. But, we had no business starting a war in Iraq in 2003 to oust a petty dictator whose days were already numbered.
