re: NOTE: That's not "our" Robert

Okay, from now on call me "Elquemataranas," which in Spanish means "he who kills frogs." As a strong advocate of reason, logic, and the scientific method, I see this moniker as appropriate -- "frogs" are representative of the many instances of reactionary responses that occur among humans to unknown.

I see Western religious traditions as the greatest manifestation of that "knee-jerk" reaction, though now highly modified through about 2,000 years of political intrigue, happenstance, and outright murder and coercion (the Crusades were not a party and Galileo only recanted under torture by the Church [so much for love thy neighbor....]).

I have arrived at the point in my life (I just turned 40) where I now see religion as great an immediate threat as WMDs. In fact, I see GWB's direct prostelytizing from the White House as reducing that office (has anyone read "A Handmaid's Tale"?)

I believe that in a distant future, long after I'm food for worms, my decendents will live in a world largely free of religion, or at least its role in public life. For example, Europe today is fully on the way to becoming the first secular region. Did you know that in France -- one time refugee of the Pope and home of the council that created the "holy day" of Sunday -- half of all French profess they are atheists? Or that in Iceland and Finland religion is almost official disappeared with less than 2% attending Church?

The USA is fully an abberation among developed countries as being moderately religious in terms of church attendance (contrary to popular belief only about 37% of Americans attend church on a regular basis)

Oops. Gotta run. Check back later.
